This webpage serves as a central location for information and resources on the management of indoor air quality (IAQ) in Delaware schools to improve the environmental conditions for school staff and students.

Senate bill 270 required the Division of Public Health (DPH) to establish routine indoor air quality monitoring standards. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), each day one in five Americans occupies a school building, with the majority of which being children. Providing healthy IAQ in school environments is proven to decrease student and teacher absences due to IAQ-related sickness and to promote improved productivity and focus for building occupants. DPH has taken a holistic approach towards this, recommending approaching building IAQ from multiple avenues to provide the best results for each school’s unique situation.

Contractor Certification Program
Senate bill 270 also requires contractors working in fields that will directly affect the water quality or IAQ of schools to become certified by DPH, this includes HVAC, electrical, plumbing, general contracting, environmental services, and remediation services. Contractors can submit an application with supporting documentation to become certified with DPH to conduct work within schools. This ensures qualified individuals will be performing duties that directly impact the health of the building.
